THE NEED

CHSLDs are not adapted for Autistic Adults

After researching the housing alternatives available in the province of Quebec for the autistic community, we realized that adults with autism are most likely to live in a CHSLD once their parents are no longer able to look after them. As you may expect, CHSLDs are not at all adapted for the special needs of people with autism. A very small number of adapted housing projects have been developed by families with support from the government and charities, but the needs are far greater than the offer.

Families need help

For the foreseeable future, families of autistic people will remain the driving force behind the development of adapted housing projects. They will need to apply for funding from the Federal and/or Provincial government. But it’s a complicated and lengthy process with uncertain outcomes.

For the select few projects that will be approved for government financing, the sums awarded will often be insufficient to cover all the costs, including the ongoing operational expenses.
